Photoshop CS6 help

Hello out there! My wonderful boyfriend recently bought me the new photoshop CS6 for creating digital art. I want to use the program for drawing/painting however I am struggling with utilizing the tools.

Would anyone out there happen to have any practical advice (or know anyone else who could help or any good tutorials) on how to best utilize the program? Should I buy a tablet? Right now I am just using a computer mouse and am having difficulty making the lines and brushstrokes look natural. If I should buy a tablet what kind? Any advice would be super helpful! Thanks

You're welcome! It was a beautiful picture. What program do you use? I just got photoshop Cs6 and I am having such a hard time with it lol.

Thanks! I use Photoshop CS6 now, but I was still using GIMP when I did this manip. It has definitely been a loooong learning curve with Photoshop, and I still probably only know how to use 10% of its capabilities, lol. When I was using GIMP, everyone said it did 95% of what Photoshop did (and is free)...but I'm afraid that's just not true; Photoshop is so much more powerful, if also more complicated. But GIMP does have a few neat tricks that I still go back to it for every now and then.

Oh okay, I hadn't heard of GIMP before. Photoshop CS6 is supposed to be the best out there right now but I wouldn't know haha. Do you use a tablet? I don't and am wondering if the tablet makes it easier to use the program.
